Internet giant Amazon is creating 100 new jobs thanks to locating what it calls a fulfillment centre on Annacis Island

Amazon Canada Fulfillment Services announced Monday (Sept. 17), the 200,000-square-foot facility will be the second of its kind in Canada. The other one is located in Mississauga, Ontario.

"We are excited to expand our fulfillment network to British Columbia, bringing new jobs and continued investment to the country while improving the experience of shopping on Amazon.ca for customers," said Brennan Weber, site leader for ACFS in a press release.

Officials with the company have not indicated if the new facility will be using a new or existing building.

The new fulfillment centre, Amazon's term for a warehouse where goods ordered online are processed for delivery, is expected to open this fall in time for the busy Christmas shopping season.

Orv Nickel, vice chair of the Delta Chamber of Commerce, said the announcement was great news for Delta.

"One hundred jobs is fantastic news for the local economy," he said. "And 200,000-square-feet of warehouse space is nothing to sneeze at."

Nickel added there is currently not a lot of new warehouse capacity available locally in the Tilbury area and speculated that Amazon could be looking at some existing facilities that would require some renovations.

"We're pleased that ACFS will grow its presence in Canada with its new fulfillment centre here in Delta, British Columbia," said Premier Christy Clark in a press release. "Our community welcomes the jobs it will bring to the region and the increased service it will provide to Amazon.ca shoppers in the area to be able to receive their packages from a facility on the west coast."

Amazon also announced it is currently hiring for positions at the fulfillment centre.

Interested applicants can apply by visiting www.amazon.ca/jobs or by calling 866-682-5627 and referencing job code: 908S.
