Beach clean-up party Friday in Tsawwassen

Beachclean-up-WEB.jpg

There's a party at the beach this Friday (Aug. 12) in Tsawwassen where local youth will get the opportunity to get outdoors, clean up their community, and have a chance to win some prizes.

Organized by Tsawwassen's Pricilla Westlake, the event is in celebration of International Youth Day when teens in a number of communities will hold outdoor events designed to get the young generation outside to interact with nature.

Westlake, 16, said she is expecting about 100 to come down to Centennial Beach and take part.

"The response from local business and youth has been so overwhelming, that I had to 'recruit' my friend and neighbour Maddie Dobson to help me," wrote Westlake in an email. "It has been a lot of work, but a lot of fun. It feels good to see so many people willing to make a difference."

Westlake added the goals of the event are simple.

"We want to encourage other youth to get outside and have some fun, be apart of the solution by putting  their trash in the garbage, and act globally—don't walk by, but to stop and pick-up trash that they see on the ground."

To thank those for attending there will be food and prizes. The first 100 attending will receive a gift bag with a chocolate bar, pen and coupons for pizza and an ice cream cone.

Also, the participants will be given a certificate documenting their volunteer hours.

"It is shaping up to be a big event," Westlake said. "The Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club will be providing burgers and drinks. Councillor Heather King will be face painting. Safeway will be supplying a big cake. Pacific Advertising will be supplying the community volunteer certificates for the students who participate in the clean-up. And Save-On-Foods will be providing two fruit platters."

Major prizes have been donated by Albany books, Centre Stage, Lucky Surf and Skate Co., Rogers Video. Sublime Art Supplies donated the face paint.  "FreshSlice, Rona, Shoppers, McDonalds have contributed 100 gifts for the gift bags," Westlake said. "Get Outside BC gave us a financial donation. Home Hardware Building Centre will be supplying the garbage bags for the clean-up."

The event runs from noon to 2 p.m. at Centennial Beach—look for the blue tent in the picnic area, in front of the pond.
