Spring/summer events in Ladener and Tsawwassen

 

Shriner's Annual Salmon BBQ

When: June 3, noon to 5 p.m.

Where: Ladner Harbour Park (4905 McNeely’s Way)

What: For more than four decades the Tsawwassen Shrine Club has served up salmon at Ladner Harbour Park to raise funds for community groups, including the Delta Hospital Foundation. In previous years, volunteer members have barbecued about 2,000 pounds of salmon for anywhere from 1,400 to 1,600 hungry people. Cost is $10 per adult.

 

Father's Day Pancake Breakfast

When: June 17, 9 a.m. to noon

Where: Centennial Beach (Boundary Bay Regional Park)

What: The Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club and Cammidge House Committee/Boundary Bay Regional Park volunteers host their annual Sunday Father's Day Pancake Breakfast where families can pack in all the pancakes and sausages they can eat while enjoying live music and a day at the beach in Boundary Bay Regional Park.

 

Multicultural celebration

When: June 23

Where: Tsawwassen Town Centre

What: The Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association in partnership with Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall, will host a day of music, dance and culture. Visit www.tsawwassentowncentremall.com for details.

 

Strawberry Festival

When: June 23 and 24, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: Bissett Farms/Westham Island Estate Winery (2170 Westham Island Rd.)

What: Owner Lorraine Bissett hosts an annual event honoring the succulent strawberry at her winery on Westham Island. Visitors have the opportunity to buy ready picked strawberries or U-Pick strawberries (weather permitting, bring your own containers), and funds are raised for the Lower Mainland Down Syndrome Society through sales of hot dogs, smokies and strawberry shortcake. Pack your lunch to enjoy at the picnic area!

Point Roberts Independence Day Parade

When: July 4

Where: Parade starts at noon at the west end of Gulf Road in Point Roberts.

What: Point Roberts invites its neighbours to cross the border for its annual Independence Day Parade. This year's theme is "Heroes." This community event also features art showings, family activities and food, fun and featured businesses and organizations at Lighthouse Park. For more details call 360-945-2313.

 

South Delta Jazz Festival

When: July 3 to 7

Where: Ladner and Tsawwassen

What: The South Delta Jazz Festival is a program put on by the Delta Community Music School with support from the B.C. Arts Council. It's an annual, week-long event featuring concerts for the public plus a five-day workshop for students from beginning to adults interested in learning about or improving their jazz improv skills in a small combo setting. Gallery in the Garden

When: July 15, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: Wellbrook Winery (4626 88 St.)

What: The Delta Arts Council presents Gallery in the Garden, a juried marketplace where local talent exhibit and sell all forms of visual arts—clay, wood, acrylic, glass, silk, oil, pen and ink, and more. Plus, there's fun for the entire family, from face painting and a pottery wheel throwing demonstration, to blueberry pies and juice and wine tasting. Entrance is by donation ($5 suggested).

 

Arts and music festival

When: Aug. 4 and 5

Where: Lighthouse Park, Point Roberts

What: This festival, in its 16th year, features two days of fun and activities, concerts, entertainers, dancers and regional artists' work. Visit the event's Facebook page for updates.

 

Delta Community Animal Expo

When: Aug. 12, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: Memorial Park (5010 47 Ave.

What: Hosted by the Delta Community Animal Shelter, this fun-filled event is a great opportunity to enjoy a day in the sun with your family, including members furred and feathered. On hand will be animal rescue and wellness exhibitors, pet health and safety education, animals for adoption, and much more.

Heart of Ladner Night Market

When: Aug. 18, 4 to 9 p.m.

Where: The Harbourside Plaza on Delta Street.

What: Heart of Ladner Night Market was created to support the Delta Hospice Society. It is a place where local crafters, artisans, and businesses can come together to raise money for a great cause. For info call 604-946-3997.

 

Starry Nights

When: Aug. 18, 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Where: Deas Island Park (6301 River Rd.)

What: Experience the magic and mystery of the park transitioning from day into night. Drum with Lyle Povah; walk along a lantern-lit trail for fun and exercise. Visit discovery stations, see shadowy forms and glistening eyes, inhale the fragrance of the forest & listen to the night sounds. Dress for the weather & bring flashlights; allow at least one hour to complete the quest.

Concerts in the park

When: End of June until the beginning of August. Concerts begin at 7 p.m. with the exception of the Delta Concert Band which starts at 7:30 p.m. Bring a blanket and lawn chair for the Corporation of Delta’s free series of outdoor concerts in park settings throughout the municipality.

Breezeway Jazz

When: Every Saturday (June 2 to Sept. 1), noon to 2 p.m.

Where: Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall breezeway, located at 56 St. and 12 Ave.

What: This outdoor concert series features local musicians every Saturday afternoon during the summer—weather permitting. A complete schedule of musicians will be posted at tsawwassentowncentremall.com.
