New DSS field pitched
A pair of Delta Secondary School parents are hoping to get a novel idea up and running in time for the Ladner school's centenary celebrations in 2012.
Parent Advisory Committee Chair Hilary Cole and Treasurer Trish Cowley are hoping to get the Delta School District and Corporation of Delta together to install an artificial turf field at the school.
The pair addressed members of the Ladner Business Association at a breakfast meeting last Thursday (Oct. 13) and said the project could help draw more business to the village.
"It would be at the heart of the community, quite simply," Cole said. "And we think that doing so will benefit more people than the current proposed location."
She added the field could be used by the school during the day, and community groups, including the nearby McKee Seniors Recreation Centre and Wintermute Boys and Girls Club, would keep the turf busy in the evenings.
Delta is currently considering putting a new synthetic pitch at Dugald Morrison Park.
While the possibility of getting the corporation and school district to work quickly enough to get the idea brought to reality by the start of the next school year is a tall order, Cole said, "We dare to dream."
In terms of cost, the pair did not have hard figures, but are confident a renovation of an existing facility would be less expensive than starting from scratch.
"And we hope that a partnership between the municipality and school district will herald a new era of co-operation between these two key players."
