Ladner power outage caused by bird on the wires
A seagull is to blame for knocking out power to nearly 3,300 customers in Ladner and south Richmond yesterday (June 7).
A BC Hydro spokesperson confirmed that the bird came into contact with power wires, resulting in an outage that started around 1:45 p.m. and was not fully restored until 8:30 p.m.
Customers in the area west of 63rd Street, south of No. 4 Road and North of 28B Avenue were affected.
In addition to residents, many Ladner businesses were left without power for hours, including Open Space Yoga, which had to cancel both of its Thursday evening classes.
Meanwhile, Bombay Joe's Indian restaurant was forced to shut down for several hours during the afternoon.
"It affected us an hour at dinner time and probably about half an hour at lunch time," said the restaurant's Jas Boghar, explaining their power was restored around 5:30 p.m.
Delta School District spokesperson Deneka Michaud doesn't believe the outage resulted in a shortened day for students.
"We didn't hear anything from our schools and we would have if they had been affected," she said.
