Tsawwassen apartment fire claims life of one person
Delta Fire and Emergency Services are investigating a fire early Friday morning (July 13) that claimed the life of one person in the Tsawwassen Terrace apartment building.
Fire crews arrived on the scene at the rear of the building on 16th Ave. and 55th St. around 2 a.m. to battle the blaze.
An estimated 60 residents were evacuated from the two-storey, wood frame structure and put up at the South Delta Recreation Centre.
No official word yet on what caused the fire.
Nearby resident Claude Prica said he was woken up by the loud cracking noise the fire was making.
"I heard the cracking noise and my wife called 911 and they (fire crews) were already on the way," he said, adding there were a large group of people milling around the scene.
"There was no major panic, apparently everyone was pretty calm and evacuated from the building," Prica said. "It was a fire, you know, not a small one. But we were petty safe, far enough away on the corner lot here."
