UPDATE 2 - Ladner man dies from car accident on Saturday
A 21-year-old man has died in Vancouver General Hospital following a car crash near the Hong Kong Inn on Ladner Trunk Rd. in the early hours of Saturday (Oct. 13) morning.
Tiffany Akins, spokeswoman with Vancouver Coastal Health, confirmed 21-year-old Mitchel Reid was taken off life support Tuesday (Oct. 16) morning.
Earlier conflicting reports led to some confusion that Reid had died in the car accident, with a roadside memorial built at the crash site and friends wishing him "RIP" messages on Facebook. But, health and police authorities said Monday he was "technically" still alive.
The family said through an intermediary that he was kept on life support after his critical injuries on Saturday in order to donate his organs
Police closed a stretch of Ladner Trunk Road between 54A and 57th streets for a while to investigate the accident which reportedly crashed into a fence and damaged several trees. At least one pick-up truck was involved.
Delta Police Sgt. Cal Traversy could not say more about the accident other than speed and alcohol are believed to have been a factor and that Reid was the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
A roadside memorial has been setup for the deceased, a former Delta Secondary student.
