Fougner running for BC Liberals
Bruce Fougner, a Vancouver real estate agent and 25-year resident of Tsawwassen, confirmed Wednesday morning (Oct. 24) his intent to run for the BC Liberal candidacy in the riding of Delta South.
Fougner has been a volunteer in local children's sports organizations for years, raising four of his own kids in Tsawwassen.
For the last six years he has been sitting on the Delta Hospital Foundation board of directors.
Here is a transcript of his speech at the Town and Country Inn on Wednesday:
I am today announcing publicly that I will be seeking the provincial Liberal nomination for the Delta South riding.
My wife and I are in our 26th year living in South Delta, we have four children and three grandchildren (and one favourite son-in-law).
My father was a PE teacher and we grew up thinking it was natural to spend just about every weekend and evening coaching other people’s kids. My first volunteer coaching position was in second year university in Victoria.
Most of my volunteer activity in this community has been with sports, Tsawwassen Soccer executive for fundraising and the World Cup Soccer event, - and coaching, coaching baseball and when my sons wanted to play basketball and there was no league in South Delta, we simply started one up. The South Delta Basketball Association (Steve Nash League) is still operational today.
For the last six years I have had the privilege of serving on the Delta Hospital Foundation Board and prior to that spent 5 years supporting the United Way of the Lower Mainland.
I grew up playing sports, and am a great team player, I would like nothing else than to represent my team, the people of Delta South in Victoria starting May 15.
I would love to bring my creative problem solving and negotiating skills to Victoria to protect the interests of our community.
It is time to bring Delta South back to the majority side of the house.
I love my family and really enjoy the fact that they all live in the lower mainland. I love that ability to have family close to home, and I want my sons and daughter living here with their children and my grandchildren.
I will have a better chance of keeping my children close to home if we do not let the NDP run this province. The last time the NDP was elected to power in this province we became a have-not province. We must not allow that to happen again. In order to do that we must elect an MLA that can work from inside an established party to properly represent our community.
There are serious issues to be dealt with, from education to health care and we must find solutions that are innovative and cost effective. We cannot simply raise taxes to spend money expecting to solve our issues by continuing to do the same thing we’ve always done even though we know it doesn’t work.
My wife and I work for ourselves and we certainly understand the value of money. We know how much work and planning it takes to make a profit and as a consequence we really don’t like it when people spend our money unwisely.
I am not a politician, I am a business man and I don’t need a job, I want to get a job done. If elected this December to represent the BC Liberal Party in the upcoming Provincial election, I will work for the great people of South Delta.
In order to have that privilege I will need support. To that end team Fougner will be signing up new members to the BC Liberal party to support me for the nomination as BC Liberal candidate for South Delta.
