Findlay named associate defence minister by Harper
Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay was involved in Stephen Harper's latest cabinet shuffle on Friday morning, naming her associate minister of national defence in a private swearing-in ceremony at Rideau Hall.
"When you're first called they don't tell you exactly until you meet with the prime minister," she said by phone interview from Ottawa, adding the prospect of working in the defence portfolio is interesting and exciting.
Findlay's responsibilities will focus mainly on military procurement and in working with defence minister Peter MacKay.
"I have to say within an hour of being appointed I was hard at work in briefings," she said. "It will take a while before I'm fully briefed up on all my files."
Findlay replaces outgoing Bernard Valcourt, who has been appointed aboriginal affairs minister following the resignation of John Duncan from the post last week.
This is the first time Findlay has been a member of Harper's cabinet since her election June 1, 2011. She was formerly parliamentary secretary to the minister of justice.
