LETTER: Losers and winners
Never mind the Minister of State for Democratic Reform expounding the many-splendoured virtues of "reforming" Canada's final resting place for politically deserving friends-of-the-government (MP Tim Uppal speaks before Ladner Rotary, South Delta Leader website, Aug. 17, 2012)
With a view to last year's surprise Senate appointments of three failed Tory candidates, Larry Smith (QC), Fabian Manning (NL) and Josée Verner (QC), to Canada's graveyard of government patronage, it remains timely to reflect on the difference between the American and Canadian senates: In the U.S. you have to win an election to get in.
In Canada, you have to lose one.
Enough said.
