Delta heading to Jr. A lacrosse finals

The Delta Islanders are heading to the B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League finals after completing a dramatic three-game rally to edge the New Westminster Salmonbellies.

The comeback concluded with an 11-10 scoreline in game five Saturday evening (July 28) at Ladner Arena with Delta's Mike Henry providing the winner at 11:49 of the third period.

Henry's lone goal of the game came with the Islanders up 10-9, thanks to four goals from Mike Mallory, a hat trick form Logan Schuss, a pair by Eli McLaughlin and a single from Cody Hawkins.

The Salmonbellies, who had pushed the Islanders to the brink of elimination by winning the first two games of the best of five semifinals, made it close after Keegan Ball scored to make it a one-goal game at 19:15 of the final period.

But the Islanders were resilient and closed out the game despite being down a man with seven seconds to go as McLaughlin was in the penalty box for an illegal equipment call and a game misconduct.

The Islanders now go on to face the Coquitlam Adanacs in the B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League final's best of seven series starting Tuesday night at the Coquitlam Sports Centre. Game time is 8 p.m.

No other dates have been posted yet.
