Islanders playing catch up in lacrosse final
The Delta Islanders found themselves in a familiar position Tuesday night (July 31)—down a game in the B.C. Jr. A lacrosse finals after losing 12-7 to the Coquitlam Adanacs at the Coquitlam Sports Arena.
The Islanders are in the finals after being on the brink of elimination in the best of five semifinals against the New Westminster Salmonbellies.
The Ladner-based team rebounded from two games down to win three in a row and face another uphill battle that resumed with game two of the finals Aug. 2 after the South Delta Leader's deadline.
In game one, the Adanacs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as Robert Chruch scored a pair of for Coquitlam who topped the regular season standings with a record of 16 wins and five losses.
Delta's Mitch Parker and Logan Schuss replied to knot the score at 2-2. But the Adanacs' offence lit up the scoreboard with another five goals in the first period, while the Islanders managed just two more thanks to Eli McLaughlin and Schuss to go into the break down 7-4.
The middle frame was a little less frantic as both teams traded goal with Delta's McLaughlin notching his second of the night.
The Adanacs then pulled away in the third period with another four goals while Ryan Watson and Mike Henry replied for the Islanders.
Following Thursday night's game the series resumes on the B.C. Day holiday (Aug. 6) in Coquitlam.
All of the Islanders' home games are slated for Sun God Arena in North Delta. The next one is set for Aug. 8. Game time is 8 p.m.
The winner earns the right to take part in the Minto Cup in Whitby, Ontario Aug. 18-26.
