The Ladner Storm U10 girls soccer team is inching closer to a $125,000 prize in BMO's Team of the Week contest.

Based on online voting, the team was in third place out of 15 teams from across the country vying for the money which will be used to upgrade a sports field in the winning team's community.

Shelley Semler, the Storm's team manager said she is optimistic her group can pass the current leaders from Ottawa and Winnipeg.

"Oh I think we can," Semler said, adding she has been impressed by the growing support the Storm has received.

When the contest began several weeks ago the Storm were in 13th place.

Steadily over the last few weeks they have risen in the standings—last week they were in 8th spot before vaulting into third and flirting with second.

"It's been quite amazing. We've had support from all over."

Semler's husband, Rob, coaches the team, while her son, Tyler, is a junior assistant coach.

"We're a real soccer family," Semler said.

Voters are allowed to cast their electronic ballots once a day until the Aug. 27 deadline (8:59 p.m.).

To help get people to do that the team has set up a voting station at the Ladner Save On Foods which will be run from 4-9 p.m. today (Aug. 23).

On Friday, the voting station will be set up outside the Ladner liquor store between 3-9 p.m.
